From a distance, this stretch of Southern California looks like one long postcard: sand, a pier, a sunset, repeat. Up close, the six towns along it spend their evenings in six different ways.

Laguna Beach: the art colony that never stopped

Laguna has been an artists' town for more than a century, and it still acts like one. Summer belongs to the Festival of Arts, the Sawdust Art Festival and the Pageant of the Masters, where famous artworks are re-created on stage by real people holding perfectly still. The rest of the year, the galleries carry the calendar.

Main Beach is the town's front porch, Heisler Park is the clifftop walk above the coves, and the tide pools reward anyone who checks the tide chart first.

Worth watching for: gallery openings, artist talks, workshops and small live sets.

Laguna Niguel: the everyday, up the hill

Laguna Niguel sits in the hills just inland from Dana Point and Laguna Beach, close to the ocean but not on it. A good evening here is more likely a youth game or a school fundraiser than a night out. Laguna Niguel Regional Park, with a paved loop around its lake, is the big open space, and the stepped federal building known as the Ziggurat is the landmark people recognize.

This is where a live map earns its keep. Fitness classes, fundraisers and weeknight meetups are exactly the kind of thing that lives on a flyer and dies on a fridge.

Dana Point: a harbor town with a sailor's name

Dana Point is named for Richard Henry Dana Jr., who wrote about these cliffs in Two Years Before the Mast. The harbor is still the heart of it: whale- and dolphin-watching boats head out from here, and the Ocean Institute teaches ocean science and maritime history at the water's edge.

Doheny State Beach is the long, easygoing family beach. Salt Creek, below the bluffs, belongs to the surfers. Up the hill, the Lantern District is the walkable stretch of restaurants, shops and bars.

Worth watching for: whale-watching trips, sunset cruises, beach cleanups and live music in the Lantern District.

San Clemente: the Spanish village that surfs

San Clemente was planned around white walls and red tile roofs, and its old nickname, the Spanish Village by the Sea, still fits. Avenida Del Mar is the downtown, lined with cafes and shops, and the pier sits downhill at the water. Surfers split between T-Street, in town, and Trestles, just past its southern edge and one of the best-known surf breaks in California.

Worth watching for: surf meetups, sunset yoga, art walks and live music.

Carlsbad: over the county line

South of San Clemente, the coast crosses into San Diego County and runs past Camp Pendleton and Oceanside before it reaches Carlsbad. The town takes its name from Karlsbad, the old spa town in Bohemia, because of the mineral water found here.

Families know it for LEGOLAND California; everyone else knows it for the Flower Fields, a hillside of ranunculus that blooms each spring. Carlsbad Village is compact and walkable, with a seawall walk above the beach, and the Agua Hedionda and Batiquitos lagoons add trails and birdlife.

Worth watching for: family days out, brewery nights, farmers markets and lagoon walks.
